Role: The Staff Accountant will oversee and maintain financial records to track the organization’s assets, liabilities, profit and loss, tax liabilities, and other related financial activities.
This position requires a professional with a strong educational background in accounting and relevant experience in not-for-profit financial management.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide strategic financial leadership to support the organization’s mission and goals.
Perform general cost accounting and other related duties for the organization.
Establish internal controls and guidelines for accounting transactions and budget preparation.
Ensure accurate recording of financial transactions and adherence to accounting principles.
Prepare balance sheets, income statements, and profit and loss statements.
Maintain and updates general ledger accounts.
Ensure compliance with local, state and federal requirements, to include routine reporting requirements.
Address inquiries from banks.
Reconcile cash disbursement accounts, payroll, and customer accounts.
Provide outside auditors with assistance.
Gather necessary account information and documents to perform annual financial audit, 401(k) audit and workers compensation audit.
Generate business activity reports, budgets and financial reports for internal departments and external stakeholders.
Oversee Kansas Department of Transportation accounting processes, including budgeting, reporting and compliance.
Supervise office staff who are responsible for financial reporting, billing, collections, and payroll.
Coordinate with software vendor to maintain accounting software systems.
Recommend updates to enhance the accounting software.
Maintain knowledge of acceptable accounting practices and procedures, and an on-going understanding of the funding structure of the HCBS/IDD Waiver System.
Ensure accuracy of data in Human Resources Information System, working collaboratively with Human Resources.
Prepare and submits payroll.
Provide payroll reporting as requested.
Liaison with third party Information Technology vendor.
Abide by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability privacy and security regulations regarding all aspects of Protected Health Information (PHI).
Perform other related duties as necessary or assigned.

Qualifications
Knowledge and Skills:
Experience: Related experience of 2 or more years, preferably with focus on not-for-profit financial management.
Certified Public Account designation preferred.
Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business Administration required.
Interpersonal Skills: Must be able to communicate effectively with all levels of personnel and individuals served.
Must demonstrate compassion for individuals with disabilities
Physical/Environmental: Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Must be able to lift at least 15 pounds.
